The key to a long-lasting block paved area lies within the sub base and preparation. A good firm base is needed and this is only achieved through careful levelling and using the correct materials. The sub-base layer is the main load-bearing layer and the correct construction will lengthen the life of any drive/paved area. Think of it as "underlay" to the "carpet" of paving.

The area would firstly be dug out and graded, if constructing a driveway then a layer of Dtp Type 1 is added, the name refers to Dept. of Transport specifications, it is also referred to as MOT1. Type 1 is a material from a certified source and should have the correct proportion of `fines` (dusty material) and solids. The mixture of solids and fines is designed to ensure that there are no voids in the sub-base material once compacted, this will also allow water to drain through.

Once the correct sub-base has been laid and compacted using a vibrating plate, sharp sand is then imported and approx. 25mm is laid, this is roughly levelled and then also compacted using a vibrating plate. Once compacted, the area is finally levelled and graded, the blocks are then laid directly onto the sand. The blocks can be laid in many different patterns, although it is recommended that the herringbone pattern is used for driveways. Once all of the whole blocks have been laid, any blocks requiring cutting are added, the blocks are cut using a diamond bladed disc cutter, not a block splitter, as we find the overall finish neater.

After all the blocks are laid, a vibrating plate is run over the area a couple of times, kiln dried sand is swept over the blocks and the area is vibrated once again, any excess sand is then removed. The area is now ready to use.

There are many different types of blocks to choose from, the standard block is 200mm x 100mm in size but many other sizes and colours are available, including red clay cobbles and paviers, natural sand stone and many more.

Most Suppliers produce brochures to help with your choice and we can also supply samples of most materials upon request. Circles, Octants and edging stones can also be added to add interest to your project.

Maintenance

Block paving requires periodic cleaning to maintain its appearance. Regular sweeping is recommended. There are many types of cleaning agents available although care should be taken as some varieties contain a concentration of acid, which could adversely affect the appearance of concrete products. For general cleaning of dirt and algae, vigorous brushing with a stiff yard broom with plenty of hot detergent solution (washing up liquid or non-bio washing powder), thoroughly rinsed with clean water should suffice.
