There are many options to consider when selecting paving for your path or patio, more commonly used are the precast slab, although natural stone such as sandstone is becoming more widely available at a reasonable cost. These are both available in many different colours and sizes.

When deciding on which paving type to have, please consider the different types of textures for your requirements, some are smooth where others are riven (uneven surface) and therefore may not be suitable for the less mobile or young explorers!

Circles and Octants are popular features because they can break up an area of paving, add visual interest or provide a stand alone area for placing a table and chairs. These are both available in different sizes up to approx. 3.5m in diameter.

Mixing slab sizes can create a random pattern, and to add even more interest cobble edging stones and squaring off kits for circles can be used.

Construction methods differ depending on site conditions and usage. Generally, the area would be dug out and have a sub-base added. The slabs are laid on to the sub-base using a wet cement mix; we use a solid layer of cement as opposed to four spots under each corner, this provides a firmer hold. Depending on type of slab, they are either laid butted up or with a small gap between, which would then require pointing. Pointing is usually carried out using a wet cement, if required, this can be dyed to complement or contrast with the paving colour. As wet cement has been used, a period of no usage for two to three days is advised.

Maintenance
Paving requires little maintenance, the occasional sweeping with a broom is sufficient to remove debris and leaves that would over time stain paving. More stubborn grime could be removed using water and a stiff brush. It is not recommended to use a pressure washer or acidic cleaners.
